Foam, fun and fooling around were in plentiful supply at a sailing charity’s ‘It’s a Knockout’ event at Malpas Park in Truro.

Heavy rain had fallen on the morning before the event held on Sunday (July 29), yet 17 teams from local businesses and differing levels of fancy dress were not deterred and competed for top scores in a series of challenges across a giant inflatable obstacle course.

Among the teams taking part were Nalders Solicitors, staff from Rick Stein, Francis Clark and Newquay Ladies Hockey Team.

More than 160 competitors slid across the foam-filled course to throw hoops over an inflatable pole, bounce on mini space hoppers, leap down a water slide and compete in a pony-style sack race. Betty Stogs, the iconic Skinners Brewery character, joined the teams to make a splash at the contest with bubbles, water and mess.

Event Co-ordinator from Turn to Starboard, Neil Triggs, said he was delighted with the turn out and estimated £3,000 had been raised for Turn to Starboard. The Falmouth-based charity supports Armed Forces personnel affected by military operations and their families.

“Despite the early wet weather, it was a really fun event with an exceptional turn out by all the teams and spectators. We are so pleased that so many people got involved and the showed great camaraderie which helped create such a great atmosphere while raising funds for a worthwhile cause.”

The family-friendly event, sponsored by pump manufacturer Watson Marlow, was won by Hawkins Motors with Lanes of Cornwall and Lee Andrew Design as runners up.
