Team Bluefin was crowned the winner of the 2024 Sea Angling Classic, held in the picturesque waters of the Solent, claiming the event’s prestigious first prize; an Extreme 646 Game King fishing boat fully rigged with a powerful Yamaha 150hp outboard engine.

In a thrilling conclusion to the Yamaha-sponsored two-day competition, Stuart Cresswell, William Kennedy and Steven Toner were presented with the keys to their brand-new vessel at the prolific fishing grounds of the Premier Marina Port Solent. Team Bluefin emerged as the overall winner after catching an impressive combined total length of 1205cm of fish, showcasing their exceptional angling skills and dedication.

Expressing his excitement, Bluefin captain Stuart said: “This is a fantastic moment for us. The Sea Angling Classic is one of the most prestigious competitions in the UK and we can’t wait to experience the performance of the Yamaha engine. This boat will undoubtedly elevate our fishing adventures to new heights.”

The Sea Angling Classic is renowned not only for its competitive spirit but also for its commitment to sustainable fishing practices. Participants are required to catch, photograph and release five different species — Tope, Smoothhound, Black Bream, Rays and Bass. The event’s unique format tallied the longest three fish of each species to determine the overall winners, promoting conservation and respect for marine life.

Ross Honey, Founder of Angling Spirit and organiser of the Sea Angling Classic, remarked on the successful conclusion of this year’s event: “Congratulations to team Bluefin, they showcased remarkable skill and perseverance, demonstrating the true spirit of competitive angling. At Sunday’s presentation ceremony, there was also an additional award for the best-placed boat with a Yamaha engine. Team Black Bridge came in 4th overall and received a wildcard entry to Yamaha’s European amateur angling competition, the Pro Fish Cup.

Beyond the competition, the Sea Angling Classic continues to foster environmental awareness and community involvement. As part of the event, each competitor participated in a beach or shoreline cleanup, highlighting the importance of preserving our natural surroundings. The event also engaged students from Portsmouth University, who gathered valuable data on fish species and habitats, contributing to ongoing research and conservation efforts.
