Dartmouth Regatta 2010
Dartmouth Regatta gets underway this week starting on Wednesday 25th August with another packed schedule of events on the water, ashore and in the air. The first ever Dartmouth Regatta was in 1822 when just three sailing races were held. To give the Regatta its true title, it’s actually ‘The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta’ after Queen Victoria made an unscheduled stop in 1856 just as the Regatta started that year. After viewing the events and offering a prize of £20 for three rowing races the Queen bestowed the title of ‘Royal’ on the Regatta. Each year a letter is written for Royal Patronage, the current Royal Patron now being Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.
This year’s event starts on Wednesday 25th August with the opening ceremony and Beating the Retreat by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. The sailing events are organised by the Royal Dart Yacht Club and always attracts hundreds of entries. A full sailing schedule can be found on the Royal Dart Yacht Club website.
The guardship this year is HMS Quorn and she is due to arrive in the river on Thursday 26th August. In the air there are displays from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on Wednesday 25th at 17.30hrs, a Lynx and Sea King on Thursday 26th as well as Friday 27th. The Red Arrows perform on Friday 27th at 17.30hrs and the Typhoon on Saturday 28th at 17.30hrs.

To add to the excitement, local 19 year old sailor Henry Bomby is due to arrive back in Dartmouth this week after his 10 week single-handed Round Britain trip aboard his Contessa 26 ‘The Seahorse’. One of the major sponsors of Henry’s project was the team at Baltic Wharf Boatyard whose sponsorship generosity enabled the purchase of ‘The Seahorse’ for the project.
Boatshed Dartmouth will be on hand during the whole Regatta period for viewings or for anyone interested in selling their boat through Boatshed Dartmouth.
