MDL’s Southampton marinas, Shamrock Quay and Saxon Wharf Marinas, are ideally located on the River Itchen in Southampton.

Both marinas offer easy access to the diverse waters of the Solent and beyond. Steeped in history, they have played a crucial part in the city’s vibrant boating scene for almost 85 years.

Shamrock Quay takes its name from the famous J-class yacht, Shamrock V, which was built on the site in 1931 for the America’s Cup. Owned by MDL Marinas, Shamrock Quay holds the highly-coveted Five Gold Anchors rating. This accolade is awarded by The Yacht Harbour Association in recognition of high standards from excellent customer service to stringent health and safety procedures.

Located just north of Shamrock Quay, Saxon Wharf is a comprehensive marine service centre offering facilities for superyachts and other large craft. Situated on the River Itchen, it is the ideal location for big boats in need of secure, quick turnaround lift-outs, repair work or full scale refits. Combined, both marinas offer berth holders a fully inclusive marina service, ideal for both leisure boating and maintenance work.

A stone’s throw from both marinas is a great selection of bars, restaurants and shops on-site, celebrating local suppliers and produce. Shamrock Quay regularly organises a range of events and activities for members to get involved with. These include a monthly Classics on the Quay event – a celebration of classic vehicles for car enthusiasts, held on the third Sunday of each month.

FACILITIES

Both marinas offer first-class berths, toilets and showers, laundry facilities, electricity and WiFi. There are also extensive shoreside facilities, including chandleries, bars and restaurants.

The 255-berth Shamrock Quay Marina is a major centre for refit and boat building, with many specialist trades on site, as well as a bar, restaurants, café and shops. There are over 40 companies on site offering a wide variety of specialist services ranging from sail makers to engineers.

Eatery highlights include the Cove and Quay FIFTEEN restaurants, both serving dishes inspired by the coast, championing locally sourced produce.

The Yellow Welly Café is also the perfect spot to grab a pre-sail breakfast. Its full English is renowned in the local area and offers an ideal start to your day on the water. For a taste of the sea, the marina also offers a bustling fresh fish market, which holds a unique pop-up restaurant during the summer months, even delivering fresh fish platters straight to your boat.

Shamrock Quay offers storage ashore for over 200 boats and there is a 75-ton travel hoist and a 47-ton boat mover. All lifting at the yard is carried out by MDL’s highly qualified team.

Saxon Wharf has a 200-ton boat hoist and heavy duty, fully serviced pontoons which can accommodate boats up to 80m. The Dry Stack facility offers secure dry berthing and on-demand launching and lifting for boats up to 13m. There is ample space for storage ashore and it is also a MDL Marine Service Centre, offering maintenance and repair facilities.

As part of MDL Marinas’ berthing package, annual members receive Freedom Berthing membership and complimentary access to 114 marinas across the UK and Europe, opening up cruising opportunities far beyond the Solent.

CRUISING

Both marinas offer a great starting location for a leisurely cruise to the Solent or for a break in Poole or Chichester.

Southampton’s water itself offers safe, sheltered sailing while the Hamble and Itchen Rivers are perfect for leisurely exploration. Keen racers have the legendary waters of the Solent on their doorstep, and around the Isle of Wight there are numerous idyllic bays and harbours, perfect for a leisurely weekend sail.

You can easily enjoy the delights of Cowes, which is only a few miles away and is home to some fantastic restaurants and shops with big brand names.

Boaters can also enjoy day trips to the historic Portsmouth harbour and gain a fascinating insight into our maritime heritage or visit the outlet shopping centre, Gunwharf Quays.

Alternatively, travel west and explore the peaceful waters of Beaulieu River, Lymington and Poole Harbour, the second largest natural harbour in the world. It is a beautiful place to spend the afternoon, anchored alongside Brownsea Island, reading the Sunday papers and making memories with the children.

Those wishing to venture further afield to enjoy the spectacular sailing in the West Country can enjoy berthing at Torquay and Plymouth – both great holiday destinations with plenty to see and do, with coves and sheltered waters along the way that can only be enjoyed by boat. Cherbourg, the Channel Islands and the Brittany coastline are also all within easy cruising distance.
