Kaskelot prepares to sail into Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour
The tall ship Kaskelot will be sailing into the historic port of Sutton Harbour at the beginning of August for a month-long stay in Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City.
The vessel is one of the largest wooden tall ships still in commission and has been a frequent visitor to the harbour in previous years. For the duration of this stay, the historic three-masted barque will be moored alongside Quay Road in Sutton Harbour, where it will host a range of events.
Kaskelot has teamed up with Cloudy Bay Wines to create a wine bar on board which is scheduled to be up and running from August 4. The bar will be open from Wednesday to Sunday until August 26 and will serve a choice of premium wines and carefully selected food on the aft deck, weather permitting.
Towards the end of the visit, Kaskelot will be open to the public during a number of open days from Friday August 31 to Sunday September 2. Tickets will costs £2 for an adult and £1 for children with visitors being able to climb on board and explore the decks and cargo areas as well as discovering the mini museum which explains the history of the ship.
In addition, Kaskelot will also be hosting a number of networking and workshop events with Salty Jobs. These will be held during the first week of September with more details to be confirmed shortly.
During its last visit in May 2017 Kaskelot was transformed into an outdoor cinema for a special film screen and was used to host the pop-up craft market Ship to Shore which attracted huge crowds to the waterfront.
Jessie Atkinson, Ship’s Manager for Kaskelot, said: “We are very excited to be returning to Sutton Harbour with Kaskelot again this year. We always receive such a warm welcome from the people of Plymouth and visitors to the harbour.
“For this visit we have teamed up with Cloudy Bay Wines to host a wine bar on board Kaskelot which we hope will be very popular throughout August. We will also be holding public open days towards the end of our stay as well as workshops and networking events in early September.”
Currently Kaskelot is scheduled to arrive into Sutton Harbour on August 1st-2nd, staying until September 10 – although this is subject to change depending on tides and weather conditions.
The ship will be open to the public between 10am and 4pm on confirmed open days, and ticket prices to come on board will be £2 for adults and £1 for children.
The tall ship was originally built in Denmark in 1948 and worked as a support vessel for Danish fisheries in the Faroe Islands. More recently the beautiful barque has become famous having appeared in many hit Hollywood films and TV dramas such as Cutthroat Island, Longitude and David Copperfield.
Mark Brimacombe, Marina Manager, said: “We are very privileged to again be welcoming the famous tall ship Kaskelot into Sutton Harbour. The vessel has always been a hit with visitors to the waterfront area and we think the Cloudy Bay wine bar will make it more popular than ever.
“Kaskelot is one of the finest wooden tall ships still in commission and the sight of the beautifully restored traditional vessel truly brings Plymouth’s maritime history to life. We’re excited for the public to be able to climb on board and learn more about this fantastic ship.”
