NEW SKIPPERS SIGN UP FOR OYSTERBOAT DUTY
Several new skippers are joining the crew of Oysterboat Terror for the 2024 season which starts on 14 May. They will be adding to a group of over 40 volunteers who regularly take paying guests out for a two-and-a-half-hour sail around Chichester Harbour.
After an extensive refit carried out by Nick Gates Classic Yacht Services at Emsworth Yacht Harbour, Oysterboat Terror is in tip top condition and ready to undertake another season of voyages around the harbour. Operated by a dedicated team of volunteers from Friends of Chichester Harbour during the summer months, Oysterboat Terror is now in its nineteenth season of operation since being restored with the help of a Heritage Lottery Grant in 2005.
Terror is owned by Chichester Harbour Conservancy and can accommodate up to six passengers on each of her trips, starting and finishing at Emsworth Yacht Harbour. Guests are encouraged to experience the thrill of sailing a traditional gaff-rigged working boat by taking the helm under the supervision of the duty skipper. During the trip they will be able to look out for the abundance of wildlife that exists within the harbour including seals, Oystercatchers, Terns, Godwits and a host of other wildlife, and maybe even the chance to see an Osprey catching fish with its talons.
Terror Operating Committee Chairman Gavin Crick said: “Terror is looking as good as ever after her latest refit and we very much look forward to welcoming guests on board for the trip of a lifetime. Our dedicated team of skippers and crew are all set to entertain and inform those on board and to give them the history of not only the famous Emsworth Oyster trade, but also point out the interesting wildlife that abounds in the harbour.”
Trips on Terror cost £35 for adults, £20 for children, and the whole boat can be chartered for £175. www.oysterboatterror.org.uk
