Seven promising young sailors have been awarded between £250 and £1,500 each from the Cofio Robin Trust to assist with their sporting achievements.
They include Catrin Williams, an accomplished windsurfer from Caernarfon, who has represented Britain on European and World level and is currently progressing to train with Olympic equipment. Also Arwen Fflur from Rhosgadfan, was referred to as “undeniably the best female Optimist sailor in the UK currently” and she was “truly grateful” for the award.
The charity supports individuals under the age of 25, based in Gwynedd and Conwy, to help them reach excellence in their sports. The total amount donated in this round was £6,750.
The Cofio Robin Memorial Trust was set up in 2018 in memory of Robin Llyr Evans, a 20-year-old from North West Wales who died in an accident in China while working at tennis tournaments.
Others from the boating community that were awarded contributions were Tyler and Tasmyn Green (Rhostryfan), Keira Luke (Colwyn Bay), Freddie MacLaverty (Colwyn Bay) and Bethany Doga (Rhos-on-Sea).
“These awards really help the individuals involved to get better, making a valuable contribution to their development,” said RYA Cymru Wales High Performance Manager Paul Simes.
Catrin Jones, weightlifter from Penrhosgarnedd was the recipient of the highest award and she explained how the previous award in October 2018 had allowed her to excel in her sport and made such an immense amount of difference to her training. She recently broke the British Junior and Welsh Senior Record in Snatch and is currently in very good form.
The youngest to be awarded a donation is Lowri Howie from Llanbedr near Harlech who is making her mark on the ski slopes. She won the Sportsperson of the year at the Anglesey and Gwynedd School Awards 2018-19 and she has won many awards on a national level and attends a ski academy in the Alps over the winter.
