HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, and Patron, Women’s Royal Naval Service Centenary (WRNS100), visited The National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth to formally open the exhibition ‘Pioneers to Professionals: Women and the Royal Navy’.
The formal visit also marked the launch of the WRNS100 centenary celebrations.
Her Royal Highness was greeted by Victoria Ingles, curator of the exhibition, and Professor Dominic
Tweddle, Director General of the National Museum of the Royal Navy. The Princess Royal had a tour of the exhibition and met veterans of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, current serving personnel and
distinguished guests. The Princess Royal gave a speech and officially declared the exhibition open, before
signing the visitor’s book.
Her Royal Highness held the honorary position of Chief Commandant of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) from 1974 until 1993, when the WRNS was integrated into the Royal Navy. Since integration The Princess Royal has held the position of Chief Commandant in the Royal Navy.
The official opening took place on the same day as International Women’s Day which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The exhibition in turn celebrates women’s contribution to the naval services over the last 250 years.
