Sir Alan Massey and Laura Swallow ASTO conference 2017
Laura Swallow, 20, who has recently completed her apprenticeship at Portsmouth Sail Training Trust, was awarded the Best Potential Sail Training Skipper Award at the Association of Sail Training Conference.
Having started volunteering with PSTT, Laura’s talent with young people was quickly spotted. Sea School Principal John Gillard was quick to select her to become the Trust’s first Apprentice Sailing Instructor. Within 18 months she has achieved her RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Commercially Endorsed Qualification, as well as gaining the BTEC Sport Development certificate from Portsmouth College.
Laura’s nomination for the award was judged by panel from the ASTO board. James Stevens, ASTO chairman, announced the results and identified Laura’s “dedication to day to day duties and being a fantastic example and role model for the young people she teaches” as some of the reasons she was the chosen winner. Sir Alan Massey, CEO of the MCA presented Laura her award and she also received £200 worth of sailing clothing vouchers.
Laura is continuing her role as an instructor with PSTT helping young people from disadvantaged areas in Portsmouth gain marine skills and commercially recognised, vocational qualifications to help them prepare for the work place.
PSTT continues to seek keen volunteers to help both on and off the water. www.portsmouthsailtrainingtrust.org
